Racing finished level on points with them with 64 each, but by Oviedo conceding only 39 goals in the league season, they ended up in sixth spot.
In the regular season of the Segunda Division, Oviedo lost 12 times, drew 13 as well and also won 17 matches. Better yet, they got another win in the first leg of the playoffs, defeating Espanyol 1-0 on home soil.
Alexandre Alemao scored midway through the second half in that match, as Oviedo had nine shots in the game and hit the target on four occasions. Espanyol, however, never hit the target from their four efforts towards goal in what was ultimately a great victory for Oviedo.
It also marks the third unbeaten game in a row for Oviedo, as they drew with Eibar in the first leg of the semi finals of the Playoffs. They then managed to beat them 2-0 in the away leg, as Alemao scored once more, alongside a finish from Sebas Moyano.
Oddly enough, their last loss was to Eibar in what was the final game of the Segunda Division season.
Espanyol also defeated them towards the end of the league campaign, as Martin Braithwaite got another goal from the penalty spot, before Leandro Cabrera won the game in the second half. Oier Luengo scored in the first half that day.
Espanyol finished fourth in the league season, winning the same amount of games (17) as Oviedo. The club also scored four more goals with 59 but also let in one more when they conceded 40 goals.
Espanyol edged past Sporting Gijon in the semi finals of their Playoff battle, as they drew the second leg 0-0 but also beat them 1-0 in first leg.
Javi Puado was the hero in that first leg at El Molinon. Forebet now predicts a draw and over 2.5 goals in the game, which would ultimately see Oviedo win the playoffs and head back into La Liga next season.
