Villarreal seeking first win in nine attempts against Real Madrid

Villarreal failed to win each of their last eight games against Real Madrid in La Liga. On Saturday, the Yellow Submarine welcome the league leaders to the Estadio de la Ceramica with the aim of ending that winless streak.

Unai Emery’s Villarreal are sixth in the La Liga standings and just three points off of fourth-place Barcelona in the race for Champions League qualification. A win for Villarreal could see them enter the top four if results go their way elsewhere.

Real Madrid are six points ahead of second-place Sevilla in the race for the La Liga title. Los Blancos are undefeated in three straight games in La Liga ahead of Saturday’s clash. Sevilla’s inability to turn draws into wins has helped Real Madrid’s bid for the La Liga title.

The reverse fixture between these teams finished nil-nil with neither side able to get a goal. Real Madrid have not won at the Estadio de la Cermica in their last four tries. The team drew each of their last four games at Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine have drawn eight of their 23 games this season, which is the third-most in the league. Real Madrid have drawn five times from 23 fixtures in La Liga.

Villarreal have been strong at home in 2021-22. They have picked up 24 points from 36 points on offer in the league at the Estadio de la Ceramica. Villarreal have also posted a +13-home goal difference.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are La Liga’s best away team. Carlo Ancelotti’s side has collected 25 points from 33 away points possible. Los Blancos did lose their last away fixture to Getafe, 1-0. It was just their second away loss of the season in La Liga.

Emery looks likely to be without three players for the weekend. Striker Gerard Moreno is ruled out until the end of the month with a calf injury. Meanwhile, Ruben Pena and Francis Coquelin are both battling injuries that should keep them on the sidelines.

Ancelotti could be without Ferland Mendy due to a muscle injury. Forward Karim Benzema is suffering from a hamstring strain. If Benzema isn’t fit, it would be a massive blow. Ancelotti could keep Benzema out of the team with a Champions League last 16 first leg match versus Paris Saint-Germain next week.

Real Madrid are unbeaten in eight straight games with Villarreal. The league leaders should post another win over the Yellow Submarine on Saturday with both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals scored.
